Will I be able to do yoga as I'm not very flexible ?

If you feel you may not be able to do yoga because you are unfit or inflexible, that is the exact reason why you should be practising yoga!  Whatever your age you can still achieve an increased level of fitness or flexibility with a regular yoga practice.  Always inform the teacher of any injuries or medical conditions you may have so that we can assist you during the class.

Which class would best for me to attend ?
Please see our Schedule page for descriptions of all classes.  We have a variety of classes to ensure that at least one will be suitable for you.  Our Level 1 and Yoga Gently classes are suitable for beginners.  Yoga is a non-competitive discipline.  You are not trying to stretch further than or even keep up with other people in the class.  You should pay attention to your own body and challenge yourself whilst being aware of your limits.  If you begin to feel pain or fatigue, take time to come out of the posture and rest.

I'm pregnant - Can I practice yoga?
Pregnant ladies are welcome to attend yoga gently classes and if they have practiced yoga regularly before then Level 1 classes as well.  We recommend getting clearance from your medical practitioner to practice yoga before attending your first class.  There are some poses which are not advisable to do when pregnant so you will be advised accordingly of alternative poses.

How many times per week should I practice?
Yoga is remarkable even if you can only attend one class a week, you will experience the benefits of the practice.  We suggest starting with two or three classes a week, at your own pace.  You may well find that after a while your desire to practice expands naturally and you will want to do more and more.

What do I need to bring with me ?
All equipment is provided for you at the studio and rental is included in the price of the class.  There are also mats and accessories available for purchase from our studio shop.

What should I wear ?
Comfortable clothes particularly around the waist so breathing and stretching are unimpeded.  It is best not to wear garments that are too loose as they make it difficult for the teacher to observe your alignment and they will also get in your way.  Bare feet are really important to prevent you from slipping and you are able to balance with greater sensitivity.  We do have somewhere you can change before/after class if you need to.

Is it necessary to book a space ?
No, we do not operate a booking system for our regular classes, however as we do limit the number of people in each class we do recommend you arrive at least 10 minutes before the class is due to start.  It is also beneficial to have a few minutes to relax before class starts.  You can drop in to any of the classes on our schedule.

Is yoga a religion?
Yoga is not a religion. Dating back at least 5,000 years, it may well be the oldest self-improvement system that ever existed.  Patanjali, the father of classical ashtanga yoga wrote the Yoga Sutras. These provided a framework for spiritual growth and mastery over the physical and mental body. Yoga is sometimes interlinked with other philosophies such as Hinduism or Buddhism, but it is not necessary to study those paths in order to practice yoga.  Infact the philosophies of yoga are universal and can be incorporated into any belief system, therefore it is not necessary to surrender your own religious beliefs to practice yoga.

This will be my first yoga class, is there anything I should do or know before class ?
Please come at least 10 minutes before the start of class so you have time to complete a registration form.  A typical 90 minute class allows specific time for total relaxation for both the body and mind.  Yoga should be practiced on an empty stomach, therefore we recommend allowing enough time for you to digest food before coming to class.  Women should avoid strenuous practice and inverted postures (eg. handstands & headstands) during menstruation.

What type of yoga will I be learning ?
Classes are inspired by the Anusara system of yoga, one of the fastest growing styles of hatha yoga in North America.  For more information please visit www.anusara.com

Can I arrange a private class ?
Yes, we do offer private classes for individuals and small groups.  The individual attention that you will receive allows us to focus more time on your specific needs and provides the opportunity for a deeper understanding of the many paths of yoga.
